| I began as a figurative painter. Although I painted in the expressionist tradition, I used line, colour and texture to describe an identifiable subject. In the late 1990s, however, I began a voyage to abstraction: a trip to China in 1998, followed by travels in India and Japan in subsequent years, totally altered the way I perceived my environment. Rather than describing a subject, my works progressively focused on colour, line, texture, and the dynamics created through their juxtaposition. Recognizable elements began to disappear; the subjects of the works became more metaphysical. My works formed a condensed visual diary of my travels.
Early last year I began to ask myself whether I could render the experience of my native environment in the same manner as I did my journeys. Inspired by my impressions of Japan – both the importance the Japanese place on their own seasons and the spare yet eloquent simplicity of much of their art and design – I wanted to reduce the elements of the Canadian seasons to their bare essence.
Needless to say, this required much experimentation and a great deal of concentration. I wanted to paint not only what the seasons looked like but how they felt, to succeed in “the momentary capturing of an essence or mood.” In so doing, I completed the circle of my artistic journey: I found that I had to have some recognizable features of the Canadian landscape in my works. Even so, I wanted to keep these aspects to a minimum, again drawing from my experiences in Asia to give the unseen as much importance as that which is seen.
The result of this process is my DOWNRIVER series. It encompasses all four seasons and was done over the past year and a half in my studio in the Thousand Islands region of Ontario. The works are inspired by the landscape of this region, and the majesty and never-ending movement of the great St. Lawrence river.
